What is really the best vlogging camera for creators in 2025?
So, you've landed here because you want to know what really is the best vlogging camera? Well, you're in the right place because i'm not just some average corporate company trying to sell you products. I'm the owner of a reputable & global Youtube specialist video production company, Trendy Grandad. When it comes to cameras, i've seen it all over the last two decades of my career and if i'm going to be truly honest with you, the companies that sell these 'best vlogging cameras' are very good at 'selling' to people who don't know too much about cameras.
I understand how you feel, it's a complete minefield. That's why I've written this blog though, to help you truly understand what the best camera for vlogging is. All of the cameras below i've used for many different reasons and I can truthfully say that I fully understand how they work & if they will be right for your vlogging ventures.
So, before we get into this article I'm going to explain how I'm going to rate each camera. There are some things that truly don't matter when it comes to vlogging so hopefully this way of scoring them will give you the true facts and eliminate everything else you don't need.

What should you know before buying a vlogging camera?
Trust me when I tell you this, the corporate companies are very good are 'marketing newbies' as they assume if you're looking for a vlogging camera, then you probably don't know too much about cameras. Ultimately you don't need to know that much, because now you have this article which holds over two decade of my camera knowledge, so you don't fall into the large company selling tactics.
1 - How will you be using the camera?
You wouldn't get in a car without knowing where you're going, the same rule applies when buying a vlogging camera. You need to know how you will be using the camera - your answer is probably 'vlogging' right? Well, are you vlogging around the streets of London, will you be in your car, on private jets or just around your house? Or do you need a camera that does all the above? You need to know these things. For example, if you're an action vlogger that needs to capture footage spontaneously then you'll need a camera that is durable and the speed to record is under 1 second! Whereas if you're a fashion blogger, and you care tremendously about your looks, you might want a camera that already has skin softening features built in so it means less editing - see where I'm going here?
2 - Will you always use it for vlogging?
Again, this is a tricky one as you're most likely just wanting to use it for vlogging. However think about some other purposes you might want the camera for, does it work for that as well? Something to think about for sure!
3 - How technical are you?
I've put this question in here because some people are horrendously non-technical and the companies that sell you these cameras are very good at making it sound like a one click and done solution. In most cases, that not the case. There will always be some degree on technicality when it comes to cameras, some however are harder than others!
Number 5 - Canon Powershot - £419.99
So, in at number 5! The Canon PowerShot is the "just grab and go" camera that doesn’t overcomplicate things. Whether you’re out capturing sunny weather or dodging a drizzle, its lightweight design makes it easy to whip out and start shooting.
The photo and video quality might surprise you, with its MP (Mega pixel) count delivering crisp images and solid performance across different modes. Plus, it’s packed with fun features like selfie modes that’ll have your Instagram followers hitting that heart button in no time. I would say, from my personal experience as a videographer, this is a pretty simple camera to use and is pretty harmless. But, there are better for vloggers. Read on.
One thing Canon has nailed is the PowerShot’s accessibility—it’s the type of camera that even beginner vloggers can feel confident using. The built-in microphone is decent for casual vlogging, though pairing it with an external mic can take your audio up a notch. Throw in Canon’s top-tier services and support, and you’ve got a vlogging camera that’s as dependable as it is fun. Perfect for any vlogger looking for quality without breaking the bank. Here are my ratings below.

Number 4 - Sony ZV1 ii - £542.00
So, The Sony ZV-1 II is like that friend who always looks good, no matter the weather. With its compact design and APS-C sensor, this little powerhouse is built for vloggers who want top-notch image quality without lugging around a massive rig. The microphone is surprisingly sharp for its type (But still use an external if you can), meaning your audio matches the performance of your visuals. And with its zoom range, you can easily switch from wide-angle group shots to up-close Instagram-worthy moments.
One of the downsides of this camera after having used it a couple of times now for vloggers is that the stabilisation in the camera is truly god awful, if you've got a shaky hand and not going to running around like me then it's great. If you're the action type, then don't buy this camera.
However, what Sony did do right is they packed this camera with features tailored for creators, like dedicated modes for product reviews and a bokeh switch to blur the background like a pro. The battery life isn’t too shabby either—perfect for those long days of shooting.
Honestly, if you’re after a camera that’s versatile, reliable, and a breeze to use, the ZV-1 II should be on your shortlist. It’s one of those brands that really gets what vloggers need. (remember my caveat though!)

Number 3 - GoPro 13 -£599.00
Arguably, the best adventure/action cameras of them all. But, in recent years i've seen lots of people use this camera to vlog and to be honest, it's not bad. It had incredible autofocus, a decent-sized sensor and lots of recording settings for a camera body that is known to be one of the smallest in store.
So, is this the camera you should buy to vlog? To be honest, yes. Although intended for action and adventure i've used this camera to vlog a couple of times and it does everything pretty well. It's small, records quickly and gets good footage. I rate it as one of the solid options to buy as a vlogging camera. Especially if you're moving around a lot and want to don't want to be fragile with a camera.
The GoPro's wide range of features really enhances the overall vlogging experience. With its intuitive display and user-friendly interface, it’s easy to navigate settings on the go. Plus, the built-in Bluetooth connectivity means you can pair it seamlessly with your smartphone and use the GoPro app to edit, upload, and even control the camera remotely. That level of convenience is perfect for vloggers who are always on the move and need their gear to keep up with them.
Another highlight is GoPro's excellent customer support and service in the UK. If something goes wrong, you’re covered with a responsive team and repair options that are surprisingly quick. The camera’s versatility across its range of models makes it a great choice for vloggers at any level. Whether you're capturing everyday moments or more dynamic shots that need the wide-angle zoom effect, the GoPro handles it all with ease to be honest. It's an investment that packs a punch in performance and reliability - go buy it, or read on. The stabilisation on this camera is wildly impressive, inbuilt sound is not so good but that's why they have an extension pack which tbh is pretty decent.

Number 2 - Sony A74 - £4000.00
So, some of you might be thinking: Why on earth have I put a professional camera in at number two, on the face of it - it's large, it's not lightweight, and it's far more complex than all the other cameras I use for vlogging. However, trust me when I say this. If you can learn how to use this camera, and you're after a more cinematic look then this camera blows all of them out of the water. So, how do you learn how to use the camera? Well, i've used it a lot for vlogging and 'run and gun' filming. In fact, I shot an entire campaign for National Geographic, traveling around Switzerland for a month with this set up. (Watch Below) So, in short, if you're looking for a more professional set up there are a few tips that I can give you that will help you increase the ease of use for vlogging.
Tip Number One - Use one lens for everything
When I shot the campaign, I used a Sigma 24-70mm, 2.8 aperture, for everything. Yes, you could argue it's not the most cinematic camera lens however it's easy, simple, durable, compact and does a fantastic job for more scenarios. Using one lens or having a non-detachable lens i've found is the most effective solution for portability in vlogging.
Tip Number Two - Buy a hand or neck strap
I know this sounds like a pretty simple tip but as you'll be on the move quite a fair bit you & will want to capture action almost instantly having your camera near your hands is pretty imperative. However, holding a camera in your hands all day gets tiring - trust me! So a neck strap, or my preferred option a wrist strap, is very helpful. Not only that but it serves as good security as well whilst roaming around cities etc.
Tip Number Three - Use a variable ND Filter
Firstly, if you don't know what an ND filter is. My long term friend Tom Lowry from The Kito Family Youtube channel once told me an ND filter is like glasses for your camera - I'll never forget that! And well a variable ND filter is what it says on the tin - variable! In simple terms you can chance the strength of the tint just by turning the end. Now this is a game changer to help aid you with moving from inside to outside and reverse and dealing with shooting in bright sunlight. It essentially helps you keep your F-Stop low in bright conditions, meaning your shots will still look more cinematic. A variable ND is one of the more compact accessories too!
Tip Number Four - Use a short handheld tripod
You don't want to be carrying around a mega heavy or large tripod with you when vlogging, however a short (4-6 inches) tripod will help you for a few reasons. The first being stabilisation, secondly for when you need to shoot a static shot (On the ground, at a table), thirdly to give your camera even more protection when putting it down.
Tip Number Five - Carry a Bum Bag
If you have the set-up I mentioned above, I don't think there is too much need for a backpack. I certainly can't stand walking around carrying backpacks all day and want to stay as lightweight as possible - not only that, I'm a delicate soul - it hurts my shoulders after days and days of walking about vlogging. So, I opt for a bumbag, fanny pack, rave bag - whatever you want to call it! In there goes my batteries, lens caps, audio kit & microphone, inhaler & chewing gum!
Tip Number Six - Use Large Memory Cards
Again, this sounds like such a simple tip, and there are probably two sides to this argument, so pick your battle! I personally lose my possessions a lot, it's a common joke within my family now, so I prefer to have less stuff to lose. A Sony A74 has two slots for SD cards, if I can keep two 256gb memory cards in each slot and only take them out when I'm data wrangling, then this is far less for me to lose rather than having to worry about where my x6 64gb cards are and backing them up throughout the day. Now, the other side to this argument is that if my SD card fails or it's performance isn't very good then I in short - I've buggered it up! Like i said though, you choose your battle!
P.S - These are the SD cards I used on my trip and we use in our video production companies daily.
Tip Number Seven - Use a Rode Mic or an external mic
Simple one again, but please, for the love of God, do not use the microphone inside your camera. So many camera companies that sell to vloggers will try and sell you on the 'amazing audio' features. It's rubbish. Microphones in cameras are only used for one purpose and that's the help video editors sync external microphone footage with the camera - that's it! So please, use an external mic. I personally use the Rode Go. It's compact, has amazing connectivity and the battery life goes on forever (That reminds me, don't forget to pack spare double AA batteries when using this mic).

P.S - This option is the best option if you want to take photos as well as video.
Number 1 - DJI Osmo Pocket 3 - £599.00
Well, you've made it to the holy grail! My number one recommendation. Firstly, let me set the record straight - as the owner of a video production company when I first saw this camera, I hated it. It's stupid little gimbal camera and miniature screen really annoyed me and I thought just looked ridiculous. However, arrogance will only come back to bite you. So, when I started using it, I started to slowly fall in love with it. That stupid little gimbal camera was fast, smooth, discrete and perfect for vlogging in every single way. Although yes, I'm sure it could improve, there are so many great things I love about this camera for the purpose of vlogging. So, if you're just here for a quick recommendation about what video camera is the best for vlogging without reading much - yes, go by this camera. If you want more detailed thoughts, you'll find them below this photo - read on!
Over a decade ago, cameras were designed to be used for multiple things - videographers wanted versatility and a product that could do everything. Look at the smartphone, for example. Nowadays, the trend in video recording is changing and we want the best video camera for the job. So camera manufacturers are designing cameras that have one purpose. The DJO Osmo Pocket 3 camera is a perfect example of this.
It's built for vloggers & this is why. Firstly, it's name. It really does fit in your pocket or in a handbag and that is essential for people who need to film quickly and with a high resolution. Again, smartphones are solving this problem also. Secondly, DJI know full well that their audience for this camera is techy, detail-focused camera operators & boy oh boy have they nailed their audience demographic on this. It's actually genius when you think about it.
Thirdly, they have solved image stabilisation for so many of us. We used to have to carry around large gimbals or rely on the so-called in-camera stabilisation - which is most cases is a load or rubbish.
Lastly, cost. If someone wanted to vlog before, it would cost them a lot of money to buy the video equipment or hire a videographer to vlog for them. This has someone eliminated that and means us creators can create even more content than we did before. Genius, right?

Flip Screen Ease - 9/10
Sound Quality 8/10 (If used properly it's fantastic)
Bonus Cam - Your smartphone!
Well, I had to mention this because it often gets overlooked. So many Youtubers and content creators actually just film vlogs on their phones - bet you didn't know that? A Youtuber I watch regularly, Trek Trendy, films 95% of his content on his phone, and it blows me away tbh because his vlogs are great. He's found a solution that works for him, rolled with it and built a large following off the back of it. Don't overlook your smartphone and if you're strap for cash, use this first before buying expensive cameras. After ll, it's not about the cameras half the time - it's about the personality & the story.
Authors Last Words
So, my last words. I've been in this video game for well over a decade now - i've bought flashy mirrorless expenses camera, fancy lenses and the newest dslr on the markets. My biggest tip to you is before you buy something like this, think to yourself - do I have the time to do this consistently for years, is what's in front of the camera right and is it the quality camera that's holding me back or something else? If you've answered the above and the answer is that you need a camera then buy the right one for your needs. If you're action/adventure packed - the gopro or osmo pocket 3, if you're wanting a professional set up, the Sony A74 is the dream!
I do truly hope this helps you in your search for the best vlogging camera, if you need extra advice please contact me through my company TrendyGrandad.
